I know what you mean about it being a culture shock going back 'home'. I have returned every Christmas for three years and every time I still feel those butterflies. I must say that SA has changed a lot on the surface since the world cup. But I think you will soon agree, when you have deal with the red taped areas, that really it's STILL good old Africa! But one more good thing has happened though! Africa has welcomed back one of it's sons (lol).

Welcome home umfowethu!

There are two points when businesses are forced to do this: at the start and when things go really badly. The first is the easiest time to change the core values, the second is usually a case of necessity. We saw this at Goldman, at GE, etc. - its when there is a unbelievable need (called a burning platform). Truly great leaders and CEO's are able to create an artificial burning platform, not always in times of crisis, but when real change is needed.

Yeah, in my experience, one of the problems is businesses write a plan then never go back and revisit. If its a journey, you constantly need to check the your bearing and direction and, at times, final destination.

I couldn't agree more - true sustainability will be found in the 'and' rather than the 'or'.

The question is: is it possible to change the core values of businesses? Sure it makes sense and after considering all the facts it's nearly impossible to deny. Yet there is one inherent 'flaw' in all businesses - it consists of humans. By nature, human environments turn inward (especially when the pressure is on). We look out for number one and our actions follow the course.

Without a doubt we are capable of being mature, thinking beyond ourselves, non-silo people - there are businesses which demonstrate this; but can we deny our human tendencies to start looking beyond our own environment?

The world has become a pressure cooker reaching boiling point, and pressure does funny things to people...
